Gov. Dikko Radda of Katsina State has approved the state’s reviewed Social Protection Policy document.
The policy seeks to ensure equitable and sustainable development of Katsina State.
It mandates the government to build a comprehensive and universal social security system and extend social security coverage to all in need.
The policy also guarantees sustainable and equitable financing of social protection systems.
It is designed to increase fiscal space for social protection; be non-discriminatory but gender-responsive, and responsive to special needs, including those of persons with disabilities.
Alhaji Mukhtar Usman, Director, Social Protection in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning confirmed the governor’s approval when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina on Saturday.
He said the policy would guide the state government to deliver a holistic social protection system that would reduce poverty and address vulnerability.
In November 2023, the ministry organised a stakeholders’ workshop in Jigawa with support from UNICEF to review and validate the social policy document.
The workshop reviewed the cost implementation plan of the policy, its monitoring and evaluation.
Mr Raham Farah, Chief of UNICEF Field Office in Kano State, congratulated the Katsina State government on the approval of the policy.
He observed that the policy document was built on International Labour Organisation’s social protection floors recommendations. Abbas Bamalli
